Chrome and Optical Velvet Chair by Milo Baughmann

$1,950.00

A mid century by Milo Baughman for James Inc. Original upholstery features a groovy, psychedelic black and beige optical print on a chrome base.

Milo Baughman was an influential American furniture designer and one of the most important figures in mid-century modern design. Educated at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, Baughman began his career in the 1940s and quickly developed a distinctive design language characterized by clean lines, innovative use of materials, and an emphasis on comfort without ornamentation. His work often explored the expressive potential of modern materials such as chrome, steel, glass, and upholstered forms, contributing to a more relaxed and livable interpretation of modernism.

Baughman’s designs are widely recognized for their timeless proportions and versatility, and they played a significant role in shaping postwar American domestic interiors. His work is represented in museum collections and remains highly influential in contemporary furniture design.

During the 1950s, Milo Baughman collaborated with James Inc., a Los Angeles–based furniture manufacturer known for producing modern, design-forward furnishings. This partnership was among Baughman’s early professional collaborations and helped establish his reputation as a designer aligned with emerging modernist trends in American furniture.

For James Inc., Baughman created seating and case pieces that emphasized simplicity of form, exposed structure, and innovative material combinations. These designs often featured slender frames, architectural profiles, and a balance between visual lightness and structural clarity. The work produced during this period reflects Baughman’s early exploration of modernist principles that would later become hallmarks of his mature style.
