Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin Serpentine Chaise
Mid-century chaise lounge rocker in textured cream upholstery on a chrome rocking swivel base. Designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Reupholstery recommended.
Milo Baughman (1923–2003) was an American furniture designer known for his refined, modernist approach to residential interiors. Largely self-taught, Baughman began designing furniture in California during the 1940s before establishing a long and influential partnership with the North Carolina manufacturer Thayer Coggin in the 1950s.
Baughman’s work is characterized by clean, architectural lines and an emphasis on comfort and livability. He frequently employed materials such as chrome, flat bar steel, glass, and upholstered forms, creating pieces that balanced sculptural presence with practical use. His designs helped popularize a relaxed yet sophisticated version of modernism in American homes, often bridging the gap between formal design and everyday functionality.
Throughout his career, Baughman produced a wide range of furniture—from modular seating and case pieces to iconic lounge chairs and tables—many of which remain in production today. His enduring influence lies in his ability to merge simplicity, elegance, and comfort, making his work a staple of mid-century and contemporary interiors alike.
