Mid-Century Italian Armchair in the Style of Paolo Buffa
Mid-century Italian armchair in the style of Paolo Buffa. Newly reupholstered in cream-colored wool boucle with sculptural wooden armrests. Sourced in Italy. Two available, sold separately.
Paolo Buffa (1903–1970) was an Italian architect and designer associated with the Milanese tradition of refined, artisanal furniture in the mid-20th century. Trained in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, Buffa began his career in collaboration with Gio Ponti before establishing his own studio in the 1930s.
Buffa’s work is characterized by a synthesis of classical Italian influences and modernist restraint. He is known for elegant proportions, finely carved details, and the use of high-quality woods—often incorporating subtle ornament, inlay, and sculptural forms. His furniture was typically produced in small workshops, emphasizing craftsmanship over industrial production.
Throughout the 1940s–1960s, Buffa created bespoke interiors and furnishings for private clients, contributing to the continuity of Italian decorative arts during the postwar period. Today, his work is recognized for bridging traditional craftsmanship and modern design, and remains highly regarded in the context of Italian mid-century furniture.
