19th-Century Biedermeier Walnut Vitrine

$3,400.00

Biedermeier walnut vitrine featuring a rectangular case with a molded cornice, slender vertical moldings, and short tapered feet. The two doors combine glazed upper sections with figured walnut lower panels, framed by veneers arranged in contrasting grain directions.

The original glass displays visible bubbles and surface irregularities characteristic of its manufacture. The right door is fitted with a keyed lock and includes a key; the left door is secured by interior bolts at the top and bottom.

The shelved interior is lined in a pale patterned fabric, a more recent addition to the cabinet. The restrained architectural form and emphasis on decorative wood grain reflect the Biedermeier tradition.

The Biedermeier period, approximately 1815–1848, developed primarily in Austria and the German states alongside a growing middle-class interest in domestic comfort. Its furniture combined restrained neoclassical forms with practical proportions and limited ornament. Figured veneers—including walnut, cherry, birch, and ash—provided much of the decoration, emphasizing natural grain, symmetry, and craftsmanship.

Dimensions: 44ʺW × 12.5ʺD × 73ʺH

Interior Dimensions: 41” W x 10” D

Item Type: Vintage, Antique or Pre-owned

Condition: Antique condition with age-related surface wear, scattered marks, and areas of veneer wear and loss. The wooden backboards exhibit splits and wear. Original glass with visible bubbles and irregularities. Interior fabric lining is a later addition.
